How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07
  2. Multiply: 0.07 × 10 = 0.7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.7 ÷ 10 × 100 = 7%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/100 = part/10, so part = 7 × 10 ÷ 100 = 0.7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =7%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.7 is the 7% share of 10. The remaining 93% is 9.3, and the two parts add back up to 10.

Discounts: 7% off an item priced $10 saves $0.7, so you pay $9.3.

Adding and taking away 7%

Increasing 10 by 7% gives 10.7 and decreasing it by 7% gives 9.3. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 7% and then lowering the result by 7% ends at 9.951, because the second 7% is taken of a bigger number.
