How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 91 = 9.1
- Check: Work backwards: 9.1 ÷ 91 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/91, so part = 10 × 91 ÷ 100 = 9.1. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*91. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
9.1 is the 10% share of 91. The remaining 90% is 81.9, and the two parts add back up to 91.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $91 saves $9.1, so you pay $81.9.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 91 by 10% gives 100.1 and decreasing it by 10% gives 81.9. These do not cancel out: raising 91 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 90.09, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 91% of 10. 10% of 91 and 91% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 91 ÷ 100 = 9.1), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
