How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 96 = 9.6
- Check: Work backwards: 9.6 ÷ 96 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/96, so part = 10 × 96 ÷ 100 = 9.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*96. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
9.6 is the 10% share of 96. The remaining 90% is 86.4, and the two parts add back up to 96.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $96 saves $9.6, so you pay $86.4.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 96 by 10% gives 105.6 and decreasing it by 10% gives 86.4. These do not cancel out: raising 96 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 95.04, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
