How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Multiply: 0.1 × 97 = 9.7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 9.7 ÷ 97 × 100 = 10%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/97, so part = 10 × 97 ÷ 100 = 9.7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10%*97. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

9.7 is the 10% share of 97. The remaining 90% is 87.3, and the two parts add back up to 97.

Discounts: 10% off an item priced $97 saves $9.7, so you pay $87.3.

Adding and taking away 10%

Increasing 97 by 10% gives 106.7 and decreasing it by 10% gives 87.3. These do not cancel out: raising 97 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 96.03, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
