What is 100 Percent of 2?

100% of 2 = 2

Step by step

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 100 ÷ 100 = 1
  2. Multiply: 1 × 2 = 2

How the answer is worked out

“Percent” means “per hundred”, so 100% is 100 out of every 100, or 1 as a decimal. Taking 100% of 2 means multiplying 2 by 1, which gives 2.

100% of a number is the number itself, so the answer is 2.

Why calculate this?

Taking a percentage of a number is how discounts, tips, tax and interest are worked out.

  • Mark-ups: pricing an item at 100% of its $2 cost means selling it for $2.
  • Tips: a 100% tip on a bill of $2 is $2, so the total is $4.
  • Interest: simple interest of 100% a year on $2 earns $2 in one year and $10 over five years.
  • Tax: a sales tax of 100% on a price of $2 adds $2, so the price including tax is $4.

A quicker way

Use 10% and 1%: 10% of 2 is 0.2 and 1% is 0.02. 100% is 10 × 10% = 2 = 2.

Swap the numbers if that is easier: 100% of 2 is always the same as 2% of 100, because both are 100 × 2 ÷ 100.

Check the answer

Work backwards: 2 ÷ 2 × 100 = 100%. Getting 100% back shows the answer is right.

Rounding

Rounded to a whole number the result is 2, to one decimal place 2.0 and to two decimal places 2.00. Round only at the end: rounding halfway through a calculation can change the last digit.

The formula explained

result = percentage ÷ 100 × number. Dividing the percentage by 100 turns it into a decimal multiplier, so 25% becomes 0.25 and 150% becomes 1.5. Multiplying the number by that decimal gives the share.

Another worked example: 20% of 11

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
  2. Multiply: 0.2 × 11 = 2.2

Common percentages of 2

10% of 2 is 0.2, 20% is 0.4, a quarter (25%) is 0.5, half (50%) is 1 and three quarters (75%) is 1.5. Knowing these makes it easy to estimate any other percentage of 2 in your head.

Adding and taking away 100%

Increasing 2 by 100% gives 4. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 100% and then lowering the result by 100% ends at 0, because the second 100% is taken of a bigger number.

Finding the original number

If 2 is 100% of something, divide by 1 to get it back: 2 ÷ 1 = 2. This is how you work out a price before tax or a full amount from a share of it.

Doing it in a spreadsheet

In Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers type =100%*2 into any cell. Replace the numbers with cell references (for example A1 and B1) to reuse the formula for a whole column.

Common mistakes

Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
