How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 75 ÷ 100 = 0.75
  2. Multiply: 0.75 × 2 = 1.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.5 ÷ 2 × 100 = 75%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 75/100 = part/2, so part = 75 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =75%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.5 is the 75% share of 2. The remaining 25% is 0.5, and the two parts add back up to 2.

Discounts: 75% off an item priced $2 saves $1.5, so you pay $0.5.

Adding and taking away 75%

Increasing 2 by 75% gives 3.5 and decreasing it by 75% gives 0.5. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 75% and then lowering the result by 75% ends at 0.875, because the second 75% is taken of a bigger number.
