How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 100 = 2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2 ÷ 100 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/100, so part = 2 × 100 ÷ 100 = 2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2 is the 2% share of 100. The remaining 98% is 98, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $100 saves $2, so you pay $98.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 100 by 2% gives 102 and decreasing it by 2% gives 98. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 99.96, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
