How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Multiply: 0.15 × 2 = 0.3
- Check: Work backwards: 0.3 ÷ 2 × 100 = 15%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/2, so part = 15 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.3. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.3 is the 15% share of 2. The remaining 85% is 1.7, and the two parts add back up to 2.
Discounts: 15% off an item priced $2 saves $0.3, so you pay $1.7.
Adding and taking away 15%
Increasing 2 by 15% gives 2.3 and decreasing it by 15% gives 1.7. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 1.955, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 2% of 15. 15% of 2 and 2% of 15 are always equal (both are 15 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.3), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
