How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 11 ÷ 100 = 0.11
- Multiply: 0.11 × 4 = 0.44
- Check: Work backwards: 0.44 ÷ 4 × 100 = 11%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 11/100 = part/4, so part = 11 × 4 ÷ 100 = 0.44. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =11%*4. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.44 is the 11% share of 4. The remaining 89% is 3.56, and the two parts add back up to 4.
Discounts: 11% off an item priced $4 saves $0.44, so you pay $3.56.
Adding and taking away 11%
Increasing 4 by 11% gives 4.44 and decreasing it by 11% gives 3.56. These do not cancel out: raising 4 by 11% and then lowering the result by 11% ends at 3.9516, because the second 11% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 4% of 11. 11% of 4 and 4% of 11 are always equal (both are 11 × 4 ÷ 100 = 0.44), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
