How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 11 ÷ 100 = 0.11
  2. Multiply: 0.11 × 82 = 9.02
  3. Check: Work backwards: 9.02 ÷ 82 × 100 = 11%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 11/100 = part/82, so part = 11 × 82 ÷ 100 = 9.02. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =11%*82. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

9.02 is the 11% share of 82. The remaining 89% is 72.98, and the two parts add back up to 82.

Discounts: 11% off an item priced $82 saves $9.02, so you pay $72.98.

Adding and taking away 11%

Increasing 82 by 11% gives 91.02 and decreasing it by 11% gives 72.98. These do not cancel out: raising 82 by 11% and then lowering the result by 11% ends at 81.0078, because the second 11% is taken of a bigger number.
