How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 11 ÷ 100 = 0.11
- Multiply: 0.11 × 9 = 0.99
- Check: Work backwards: 0.99 ÷ 9 × 100 = 11%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 11/100 = part/9, so part = 11 × 9 ÷ 100 = 0.99. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =11%*9. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.99 is the 11% share of 9. The remaining 89% is 8.01, and the two parts add back up to 9.
Discounts: 11% off an item priced $9 saves $0.99, so you pay $8.01.
Adding and taking away 11%
Increasing 9 by 11% gives 9.99 and decreasing it by 11% gives 8.01. These do not cancel out: raising 9 by 11% and then lowering the result by 11% ends at 8.8911, because the second 11% is taken of a bigger number.
