How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Multiply: 0.1 × 1000 = 100
  3. Check: Work backwards: 100 ÷ 1000 × 100 = 10%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/1000, so part = 10 × 1000 ÷ 100 = 100. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10%*1000. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

100 is the 10% share of 1000. The remaining 90% is 900, and the two parts add back up to 1000.

Discounts: 10% off an item priced $1,000 saves $100, so you pay $900.

Adding and taking away 10%

Increasing 1000 by 10% gives 1,100 and decreasing it by 10% gives 900. These do not cancel out: raising 1000 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 990, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 1000% of 10. 10% of 1000 and 1000% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 1000 ÷ 100 = 100), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
