How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
  2. Multiply: 0.12 × 1 = 0.12
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.12 ÷ 1 × 100 = 12%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/1, so part = 12 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.12. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.12 is the 12% share of 1. The remaining 88% is 0.88, and the two parts add back up to 1.

Discounts: 12% off an item priced $1 saves $0.12, so you pay $0.88.

Adding and taking away 12%

Increasing 1 by 12% gives 1.12 and decreasing it by 12% gives 0.88. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 0.9856, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
