How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 12 = 0.12
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.12 ÷ 12 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/12, so part = 1 × 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.12 is the 1% share of 12. The remaining 99% is 11.88, and the two parts add back up to 12.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $12 saves $0.12, so you pay $11.88.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 12 by 1% gives 12.12 and decreasing it by 1% gives 11.88. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 11.9988, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
