How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
- Multiply: 0.12 × 24 = 2.88
- Check: Work backwards: 2.88 ÷ 24 × 100 = 12%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/24, so part = 12 × 24 ÷ 100 = 2.88. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =12%*24. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.88 is the 12% share of 24. The remaining 88% is 21.12, and the two parts add back up to 24.
Discounts: 12% off an item priced $24 saves $2.88, so you pay $21.12.
Adding and taking away 12%
Increasing 24 by 12% gives 26.88 and decreasing it by 12% gives 21.12. These do not cancel out: raising 24 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 23.6544, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
