How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
  2. Multiply: 0.12 × 36 = 4.32
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.32 ÷ 36 × 100 = 12%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/36, so part = 12 × 36 ÷ 100 = 4.32. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12%*36. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.32 is the 12% share of 36. The remaining 88% is 31.68, and the two parts add back up to 36.

Discounts: 12% off an item priced $36 saves $4.32, so you pay $31.68.

Adding and taking away 12%

Increasing 36 by 12% gives 40.32 and decreasing it by 12% gives 31.68. These do not cancel out: raising 36 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 35.4816, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
