How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
  2. Multiply: 0.12 × 50 = 6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6 ÷ 50 × 100 = 12%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/50, so part = 12 × 50 ÷ 100 = 6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6 is the 12% share of 50. The remaining 88% is 44, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 12% off an item priced $50 saves $6, so you pay $44.

Adding and taking away 12%

Increasing 50 by 12% gives 56 and decreasing it by 12% gives 44. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 49.28, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
