How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
  2. Multiply: 0.12 × 56 = 6.72
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.72 ÷ 56 × 100 = 12%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/56, so part = 12 × 56 ÷ 100 = 6.72. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12%*56. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.72 is the 12% share of 56. The remaining 88% is 49.28, and the two parts add back up to 56.

Discounts: 12% off an item priced $56 saves $6.72, so you pay $49.28.

Adding and taking away 12%

Increasing 56 by 12% gives 62.72 and decreasing it by 12% gives 49.28. These do not cancel out: raising 56 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 55.1936, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
