How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 120 ÷ 100 = 1.2
- Multiply: 1.2 × 50 = 60
- Check: Work backwards: 60 ÷ 50 × 100 = 120%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 120/100 = part/50, so part = 120 × 50 ÷ 100 = 60. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =120%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
Because 120% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 50: it is 1.2 times 50.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 120% of its $50 cost means selling it for $60.
Adding and taking away 120%
Increasing 50 by 120% gives 110. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 120% and then lowering the result by 120% ends at -22, because the second 120% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 50% of 120. 120% of 50 and 50% of 120 are always equal (both are 120 × 50 ÷ 100 = 60), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
