How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 13 ÷ 100 = 0.13
  2. Multiply: 0.13 × 17 = 2.21
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.21 ÷ 17 × 100 = 13%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 13/100 = part/17, so part = 13 × 17 ÷ 100 = 2.21. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =13%*17. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.21 is the 13% share of 17. The remaining 87% is 14.79, and the two parts add back up to 17.

Discounts: 13% off an item priced $17 saves $2.21, so you pay $14.79.

Adding and taking away 13%

Increasing 17 by 13% gives 19.21 and decreasing it by 13% gives 14.79. These do not cancel out: raising 17 by 13% and then lowering the result by 13% ends at 16.7127, because the second 13% is taken of a bigger number.
