How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 17 ÷ 100 = 0.17
  2. Multiply: 0.17 × 13 = 2.21
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.21 ÷ 13 × 100 = 17%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 17/100 = part/13, so part = 17 × 13 ÷ 100 = 2.21. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =17%*13. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.21 is the 17% share of 13. The remaining 83% is 10.79, and the two parts add back up to 13.

Discounts: 17% off an item priced $13 saves $2.21, so you pay $10.79.

Adding and taking away 17%

Increasing 13 by 17% gives 15.21 and decreasing it by 17% gives 10.79. These do not cancel out: raising 13 by 17% and then lowering the result by 17% ends at 12.6243, because the second 17% is taken of a bigger number.
