How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 13 ÷ 100 = 0.13
  2. Multiply: 0.13 × 25 = 3.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.25 ÷ 25 × 100 = 13%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 13/100 = part/25, so part = 13 × 25 ÷ 100 = 3.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =13%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.25 is the 13% share of 25. The remaining 87% is 21.75, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 13% off an item priced $25 saves $3.25, so you pay $21.75.

Adding and taking away 13%

Increasing 25 by 13% gives 28.25 and decreasing it by 13% gives 21.75. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 13% and then lowering the result by 13% ends at 24.5775, because the second 13% is taken of a bigger number.
