How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 13 ÷ 100 = 0.13
  2. Multiply: 0.13 × 4 = 0.52
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.52 ÷ 4 × 100 = 13%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 13/100 = part/4, so part = 13 × 4 ÷ 100 = 0.52. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =13%*4. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.52 is the 13% share of 4. The remaining 87% is 3.48, and the two parts add back up to 4.

Discounts: 13% off an item priced $4 saves $0.52, so you pay $3.48.

Adding and taking away 13%

Increasing 4 by 13% gives 4.52 and decreasing it by 13% gives 3.48. These do not cancel out: raising 4 by 13% and then lowering the result by 13% ends at 3.9324, because the second 13% is taken of a bigger number.
