How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
  2. Multiply: 0.04 × 13 = 0.52
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.52 ÷ 13 × 100 = 4%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/13, so part = 4 × 13 ÷ 100 = 0.52. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =4%*13. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.52 is the 4% share of 13. The remaining 96% is 12.48, and the two parts add back up to 13.

Discounts: 4% off an item priced $13 saves $0.52, so you pay $12.48.

Adding and taking away 4%

Increasing 13 by 4% gives 13.52 and decreasing it by 4% gives 12.48. These do not cancel out: raising 13 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 12.9792, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.
