How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 13 ÷ 100 = 0.13
- Multiply: 0.13 × 7 = 0.91
- Check: Work backwards: 0.91 ÷ 7 × 100 = 13%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 13/100 = part/7, so part = 13 × 7 ÷ 100 = 0.91. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =13%*7. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.91 is the 13% share of 7. The remaining 87% is 6.09, and the two parts add back up to 7.
Discounts: 13% off an item priced $7 saves $0.91, so you pay $6.09.
Adding and taking away 13%
Increasing 7 by 13% gives 7.91 and decreasing it by 13% gives 6.09. These do not cancel out: raising 7 by 13% and then lowering the result by 13% ends at 6.8817, because the second 13% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 7% of 13. 13% of 7 and 7% of 13 are always equal (both are 13 × 7 ÷ 100 = 0.91), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
