How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 13 ÷ 100 = 0.13
  2. Multiply: 0.13 × 75 = 9.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 9.75 ÷ 75 × 100 = 13%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 13/100 = part/75, so part = 13 × 75 ÷ 100 = 9.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =13%*75. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

9.75 is the 13% share of 75. The remaining 87% is 65.25, and the two parts add back up to 75.

Discounts: 13% off an item priced $75 saves $9.75, so you pay $65.25.

Adding and taking away 13%

Increasing 75 by 13% gives 84.75 and decreasing it by 13% gives 65.25. These do not cancel out: raising 75 by 13% and then lowering the result by 13% ends at 73.7325, because the second 13% is taken of a bigger number.
