How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 14 ÷ 100 = 0.14
- Multiply: 0.14 × 6 = 0.84
- Check: Work backwards: 0.84 ÷ 6 × 100 = 14%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 14/100 = part/6, so part = 14 × 6 ÷ 100 = 0.84. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =14%*6. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.84 is the 14% share of 6. The remaining 86% is 5.16, and the two parts add back up to 6.
Discounts: 14% off an item priced $6 saves $0.84, so you pay $5.16.
Adding and taking away 14%
Increasing 6 by 14% gives 6.84 and decreasing it by 14% gives 5.16. These do not cancel out: raising 6 by 14% and then lowering the result by 14% ends at 5.8824, because the second 14% is taken of a bigger number.
