How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Multiply: 0.15 × 18 = 2.7
- Check: Work backwards: 2.7 ÷ 18 × 100 = 15%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/18, so part = 15 × 18 ÷ 100 = 2.7. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15%*18. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
