How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 18 ÷ 100 = 0.18
  2. Multiply: 0.18 × 15 = 2.7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.7 ÷ 15 × 100 = 18%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 18/100 = part/15, so part = 18 × 15 ÷ 100 = 2.7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =18%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.7 is the 18% share of 15. The remaining 82% is 12.3, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 18% off an item priced $15 saves $2.7, so you pay $12.3.

Adding and taking away 18%

Increasing 15 by 18% gives 17.7 and decreasing it by 18% gives 12.3. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 18% and then lowering the result by 18% ends at 14.514, because the second 18% is taken of a bigger number.
