How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
- Multiply: 0.02 × 15 = 0.3
- Check: Work backwards: 0.3 ÷ 15 × 100 = 2%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/15, so part = 2 × 15 ÷ 100 = 0.3. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =2%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.3 is the 2% share of 15. The remaining 98% is 14.7, and the two parts add back up to 15.
Discounts: 2% off an item priced $15 saves $0.3, so you pay $14.7.
Adding and taking away 2%
Increasing 15 by 2% gives 15.3 and decreasing it by 2% gives 14.7. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 14.994, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 15% of 2. 2% of 15 and 15% of 2 are always equal (both are 2 × 15 ÷ 100 = 0.3), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
