How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 26 = 3.9
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.9 ÷ 26 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/26, so part = 15 × 26 ÷ 100 = 3.9. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*26. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.9 is the 15% share of 26. The remaining 85% is 22.1, and the two parts add back up to 26.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $26 saves $3.9, so you pay $22.1.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 26 by 15% gives 29.9 and decreasing it by 15% gives 22.1. These do not cancel out: raising 26 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 25.415, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
