How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 26 ÷ 100 = 0.26
  2. Multiply: 0.26 × 15 = 3.9
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.9 ÷ 15 × 100 = 26%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 26/100 = part/15, so part = 26 × 15 ÷ 100 = 3.9. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =26%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.9 is the 26% share of 15. The remaining 74% is 11.1, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 26% off an item priced $15 saves $3.9, so you pay $11.1.

Adding and taking away 26%

Increasing 15 by 26% gives 18.9 and decreasing it by 26% gives 11.1. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 26% and then lowering the result by 26% ends at 13.986, because the second 26% is taken of a bigger number.
