How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 38 = 5.7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.7 ÷ 38 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/38, so part = 15 × 38 ÷ 100 = 5.7. Both methods always give the same answer.
