How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Multiply: 0.15 × 4 = 0.6
- Check: Work backwards: 0.6 ÷ 4 × 100 = 15%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/4, so part = 15 × 4 ÷ 100 = 0.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15%*4. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.6 is the 15% share of 4. The remaining 85% is 3.4, and the two parts add back up to 4.
Discounts: 15% off an item priced $4 saves $0.6, so you pay $3.4.
Adding and taking away 15%
Increasing 4 by 15% gives 4.6 and decreasing it by 15% gives 3.4. These do not cancel out: raising 4 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 3.91, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
