How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
- Multiply: 0.04 × 15 = 0.6
- Check: Work backwards: 0.6 ÷ 15 × 100 = 4%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/15, so part = 4 × 15 ÷ 100 = 0.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =4%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.6 is the 4% share of 15. The remaining 96% is 14.4, and the two parts add back up to 15.
Discounts: 4% off an item priced $15 saves $0.6, so you pay $14.4.
Adding and taking away 4%
Increasing 15 by 4% gives 15.6 and decreasing it by 4% gives 14.4. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 14.976, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 15% of 4. 4% of 15 and 15% of 4 are always equal (both are 4 × 15 ÷ 100 = 0.6), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
