How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
- Multiply: 0.6 × 15 = 9
- Check: Work backwards: 9 ÷ 15 × 100 = 60%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/15, so part = 60 × 15 ÷ 100 = 9. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =60%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
9 is the 60% share of 15. The remaining 40% is 6, and the two parts add back up to 15.
Discounts: 60% off an item priced $15 saves $9, so you pay $6.
Adding and taking away 60%
Increasing 15 by 60% gives 24 and decreasing it by 60% gives 6. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 9.6, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
