How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
- Multiply: 0.25 × 400 = 100
- Check: Work backwards: 100 ÷ 400 × 100 = 25%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/400, so part = 25 × 400 ÷ 100 = 100. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =25%*400. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
100 is the 25% share of 400. The remaining 75% is 300, and the two parts add back up to 400.
Discounts: 25% off an item priced $400 saves $100, so you pay $300.
Adding and taking away 25%
Increasing 400 by 25% gives 500 and decreasing it by 25% gives 300. These do not cancel out: raising 400 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 375, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
