How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 400 = 40
- Check: Work backwards: 40 ÷ 400 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/400, so part = 10 × 400 ÷ 100 = 40. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*400. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
40 is the 10% share of 400. The remaining 90% is 360, and the two parts add back up to 400.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $400 saves $40, so you pay $360.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 400 by 10% gives 440 and decreasing it by 10% gives 360. These do not cancel out: raising 400 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 396, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 400% of 10. 10% of 400 and 400% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 400 ÷ 100 = 40), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
