How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 78 = 11.7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 11.7 ÷ 78 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/78, so part = 15 × 78 ÷ 100 = 11.7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*78. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

11.7 is the 15% share of 78. The remaining 85% is 66.3, and the two parts add back up to 78.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $78 saves $11.7, so you pay $66.3.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 78 by 15% gives 89.7 and decreasing it by 15% gives 66.3. These do not cancel out: raising 78 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 76.245, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
