How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 78 ÷ 100 = 0.78
  2. Multiply: 0.78 × 15 = 11.7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 11.7 ÷ 15 × 100 = 78%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 78/100 = part/15, so part = 78 × 15 ÷ 100 = 11.7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =78%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

11.7 is the 78% share of 15. The remaining 22% is 3.3, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 78% off an item priced $15 saves $11.7, so you pay $3.3.

Adding and taking away 78%

Increasing 15 by 78% gives 26.7 and decreasing it by 78% gives 3.3. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 78% and then lowering the result by 78% ends at 5.874, because the second 78% is taken of a bigger number.
