How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Multiply: 0.15 × 98 = 14.7
- Check: Work backwards: 14.7 ÷ 98 × 100 = 15%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/98, so part = 15 × 98 ÷ 100 = 14.7. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15%*98. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
14.7 is the 15% share of 98. The remaining 85% is 83.3, and the two parts add back up to 98.
Discounts: 15% off an item priced $98 saves $14.7, so you pay $83.3.
Adding and taking away 15%
Increasing 98 by 15% gives 112.7 and decreasing it by 15% gives 83.3. These do not cancel out: raising 98 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 95.795, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
