How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 98 ÷ 100 = 0.98
  2. Multiply: 0.98 × 15 = 14.7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 14.7 ÷ 15 × 100 = 98%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 98/100 = part/15, so part = 98 × 15 ÷ 100 = 14.7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =98%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

14.7 is the 98% share of 15. The remaining 2% is 0.3, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 98% off an item priced $15 saves $14.7, so you pay $0.3.

Adding and taking away 98%

Increasing 15 by 98% gives 29.7 and decreasing it by 98% gives 0.3. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 98% and then lowering the result by 98% ends at 0.594, because the second 98% is taken of a bigger number.
