How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 16 ÷ 100 = 0.16
  2. Multiply: 0.16 × 15 = 2.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.4 ÷ 15 × 100 = 16%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 16/100 = part/15, so part = 16 × 15 ÷ 100 = 2.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =16%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.4 is the 16% share of 15. The remaining 84% is 12.6, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 16% off an item priced $15 saves $2.4, so you pay $12.6.

Adding and taking away 16%

Increasing 15 by 16% gives 17.4 and decreasing it by 16% gives 12.6. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 16% and then lowering the result by 16% ends at 14.616, because the second 16% is taken of a bigger number.
