How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 16 = 2.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.4 ÷ 16 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/16, so part = 15 × 16 ÷ 100 = 2.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*16. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.4 is the 15% share of 16. The remaining 85% is 13.6, and the two parts add back up to 16.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $16 saves $2.4, so you pay $13.6.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 16 by 15% gives 18.4 and decreasing it by 15% gives 13.6. These do not cancel out: raising 16 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 15.64, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 16% of 15. 15% of 16 and 16% of 15 are always equal (both are 15 × 16 ÷ 100 = 2.4), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
