How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 16 ÷ 100 = 0.16
  2. Multiply: 0.16 × 75 = 12
  3. Check: Work backwards: 12 ÷ 75 × 100 = 16%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 16/100 = part/75, so part = 16 × 75 ÷ 100 = 12. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =16%*75. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

12 is the 16% share of 75. The remaining 84% is 63, and the two parts add back up to 75.

Discounts: 16% off an item priced $75 saves $12, so you pay $63.

Adding and taking away 16%

Increasing 75 by 16% gives 87 and decreasing it by 16% gives 63. These do not cancel out: raising 75 by 16% and then lowering the result by 16% ends at 73.08, because the second 16% is taken of a bigger number.
