How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 18 ÷ 100 = 0.18
  2. Multiply: 0.18 × 1 = 0.18
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.18 ÷ 1 × 100 = 18%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 18/100 = part/1, so part = 18 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.18. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =18%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.18 is the 18% share of 1. The remaining 82% is 0.82, and the two parts add back up to 1.

Discounts: 18% off an item priced $1 saves $0.18, so you pay $0.82.

Adding and taking away 18%

Increasing 1 by 18% gives 1.18 and decreasing it by 18% gives 0.82. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 18% and then lowering the result by 18% ends at 0.9676, because the second 18% is taken of a bigger number.
