How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
- Multiply: 0.01 × 18 = 0.18
- Check: Work backwards: 0.18 ÷ 18 × 100 = 1%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/18, so part = 1 × 18 ÷ 100 = 0.18. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =1%*18. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.18 is the 1% share of 18. The remaining 99% is 17.82, and the two parts add back up to 18.
Discounts: 1% off an item priced $18 saves $0.18, so you pay $17.82.
Adding and taking away 1%
Increasing 18 by 1% gives 18.18 and decreasing it by 1% gives 17.82. These do not cancel out: raising 18 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 17.9982, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 18% of 1. 1% of 18 and 18% of 1 are always equal (both are 1 × 18 ÷ 100 = 0.18), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
