How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 18 ÷ 100 = 0.18
  2. Multiply: 0.18 × 2 = 0.36
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.36 ÷ 2 × 100 = 18%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 18/100 = part/2, so part = 18 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.36. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =18%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.36 is the 18% share of 2. The remaining 82% is 1.64, and the two parts add back up to 2.

Discounts: 18% off an item priced $2 saves $0.36, so you pay $1.64.

Adding and taking away 18%

Increasing 2 by 18% gives 2.36 and decreasing it by 18% gives 1.64. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 18% and then lowering the result by 18% ends at 1.9352, because the second 18% is taken of a bigger number.
