How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 19 ÷ 100 = 0.19
- Multiply: 0.19 × 20 = 3.8
- Check: Work backwards: 3.8 ÷ 20 × 100 = 19%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 19/100 = part/20, so part = 19 × 20 ÷ 100 = 3.8. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =19%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
3.8 is the 19% share of 20. The remaining 81% is 16.2, and the two parts add back up to 20.
Discounts: 19% off an item priced $20 saves $3.8, so you pay $16.2.
Adding and taking away 19%
Increasing 20 by 19% gives 23.8 and decreasing it by 19% gives 16.2. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 19% and then lowering the result by 19% ends at 19.278, because the second 19% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 20% of 19. 19% of 20 and 20% of 19 are always equal (both are 19 × 20 ÷ 100 = 3.8), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
