How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
- Multiply: 0.2 × 19 = 3.8
- Check: Work backwards: 3.8 ÷ 19 × 100 = 20%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 20/100 = part/19, so part = 20 × 19 ÷ 100 = 3.8. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =20%*19. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
3.8 is the 20% share of 19. The remaining 80% is 15.2, and the two parts add back up to 19.
Discounts: 20% off an item priced $19 saves $3.8, so you pay $15.2.
Adding and taking away 20%
Increasing 19 by 20% gives 22.8 and decreasing it by 20% gives 15.2. These do not cancel out: raising 19 by 20% and then lowering the result by 20% ends at 18.24, because the second 20% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 19% of 20. 20% of 19 and 19% of 20 are always equal (both are 20 × 19 ÷ 100 = 3.8), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
